A warm welcome to Owl Class. We are a very happy and caring team who learn through fun and hard work. Year 1 is a big step up for the children and our priority is to ensure that your child feels happy and safe. We aim to encourage independence and confidence as the children move on through the school. We have an exciting year ahead and are looking forward to many great learning activities and adventures.

This term we will be learning about cold places. We will be reading the story of 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers. We will be finding out all about penguins and how they are suited to living in the cold. We will learn all about Captain Scott and his race to the South Pole, sequencing the events and learning about his life. We will be use our geographical skills to locate and name continents and oceans, plotting routes on maps and discussing similarities and differences between places. we will be creating large scale mixed media art works as well as designing, creating and evaluating model boats. In Science we will be exploring the properties of materials, carrying out a series of fair tests to evaluate the suitability of different materials for different purposes. We will also be using our programming skills to design algorithms to help a beebot navigate to the South Pole.

Madame Pond will be leading our interactive French sessions on a Thursday morning. The children learn through a variety of exciting interactive activities. On   September 26th we will celebrate the European Day of Languages. (http://edl.ecml.at/)

The children will really benefit from the expertise of our sports coaches: Ollie and AJ. Every Tuesday afternoon they will be taking part in a wide range of sports activities indoors and outdoors. Other P.E. sessions will take place on a Friday morning. Please ensure your child has her/his kit each day though as there may be other physical sessions throughout the week.
