Help at Home

Below, are a number of ways in which you can support your child at home while they are in Owl class.

Just have a lovely time with them! They work their little socks off for so many hours of the day...let home be a place of play, calm and togetherness.

Talk to them about their day! This may seem like an obvious one but explaining what they have done in class to you can really help your child to embed their learning.

Read, Read, Read

Read with your child as often as possible! It may be that your child is becoming more independent in their reading and that they prefer to read to themselves but please do continue to share lovely books together and talk to them about what they're reading! :)

You will find new books in their reading folder on a Thursday.

Spellings

In both year 2 and 3, the children are expected to learn a number of spelling rules and patterns.  The children will receive one set of spellings per week to learn at home. Spellings will be given to the children on paper on a Tuesday. They will then be tested the following Monday. Your children will have spelling lessons in school, however any extra support with the learning of these words and patterns would be fantastic!

Each half term, the children will focus on a list of year group specific words (common exception words for Year 2 and words from the National Curriculum Word list for year 3). These words will be displayed in the classroom and the children will be encouraged to use them as much as possible in their writing. We will not have a weekly test on these words, but please support in both reading and spelling these words at home.

Here are the year group specific words for the first half of the Autumn Term:

Times Tables

In Owl Class, we will be practising times tables regularly through a range of fun games and challenges including ‘Big Maths Beat That’ and ‘Times Table Rock Stars’.

Year 2 will be focusing on their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and year 3 will also be looking at their 3, 4 and 8 times tables.

You may want to use the websites below for a fun and interactive way to learn times tables:

Anything else that takes your fancy! Each term, there will be a topic overview provided. These can be found on the relevant term tab on our class page and will give a brief overview of learning across the different subject areas. Please feel free to extend this learning at home through independent research, Art and craft projects, cooking (as long as we get a taster), map skills...

Thank you for all of your wonderful support!
