Kestrel Home Learning W/C 20th April

Date: 19th Apr 2020 @ 1:26pm

Hello Everyone

I hope you have all enjoyed the break and stayed safe. Hopefully everyone managed to get outside and enjoy the lovely weather? I have managed to get lots of jobs done in the garden.

Kestrels - I was listening to the radio yesterday and 'Can't stop the feeling' by Justin Timberlake came on (the trolls song) and it reminded me of all the fun times we have dancing to it. I thought perhaps you could ask a grown up to play it and have a dance with your family at home?

I have got lots of fun activities planned for this week, but just as before the break, please just do as much as you can.

Don't forget to email me with all the things you have been up to kestrelhomelearning@ashtonhayes.cheshire.sch.uk

Best Wishes

Mrs Cuthbert

Tuesday 21st April

Full circle game

Using the word lists in the attached files can you play the full circle game? You can use either magnetic letters, a whiteboard and pen or you can write each new word (or just say the sounds).

The aim of the game is for the words to go ‘full circle’. By changing just one letter with each new word until you reach the word you started with again.

Playing the game;

Start with the first word in the list.

Say each word in the list in turn, listen to the sounds in the word and work out which letter has changed and then alter your word by one letter each time either by changing your magnetic letters, altering your word on the whiteboard or writing the new word you have created.

Maybe you could play this as a family game with each person joining in – either using their own set of letters or by passing the ‘word’ around so each person gets a chance to change the word?

Oxford Owls Ebooks

The Ox and the Yak

Please support your child to decode the words as much as they require. Talk about the text, predicting what might happen next, who they can see, looking at the other print I the text, such as the banner on the float. Try to encourage them to point at the words as they read them.

Pattern hunt – can you go for a pattern hunt outside – bricks, pavements, bark, petals etc

When thinking about repeating patterns, it is helpful to say the pattern out loud to help identify the repeating part. Try exploring patterns using actions whilst saying the words (with 2 or 3 repeating movements) for example hands up, hands down, hands up hands down. Or clap hands, tap knees, pat head, clap hands, pat knees, tap head…

Can your child continue a pattern you have made or perhaps make one of their own?

Can you create a science lab or a wizard’s cave and have a go at some potion making…

Eg baking soda, vinegar, washing up liquid, glitter creating a fizzing potion.

Or maybe mix diff coloured liquids to create new colours. Or perhaps you could put oil and (coloured) water into a sealable container and see if you can make them mix?

Maybe read The Wizard and the Princess – Julia Donaldson, or watch it on youtube if you don’t have a copy of it.

Can you find some different food in the kitchen and sort it  into ‘healthy’ and ‘not healthy’ can you explain how and why you sorted the food into the 2 groups

Using pencils, water and brushes, chalk etc Can you practice how to write the letter ‘e’ Remember to ‘cut off the egg and scoop it out’

Can you play shops? What could you sell? How much are your items going to be? Do you need any signs for your shop? Have you got any coins at home you could use in your shop?

Have a good day

Tricky words There are lots of different ways to learn ‘tricky words’ as they can’t be read using the word building skills the children are so good at so come down to lots of practice…

This involves lots of exposure to the word and can include matching games, looking at the word, reading it and having a go at writing it, flashcards of the word, detective games - hunting for it in books or hidden around the home etc

Today please can you focus on the words;

no, go was, my

In addition to the above, suggested games on phonicsplay include

Train your brain and Tricky trucks

Enjoy one of your favourite stories from your home – can you talk about the different characters and describe them – what words could you use? if you have Zog, perhaps thatb would be a good one today?

Can your child continue a pattern you have made or perhaps make one of their own?

Can you make a repeating pattern printing different objects into playdough, or make prints in paint?

There are various repeating pattern games that can be found on the Bugs and buttons app and the following website https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Search.aspx?q=FINISH%20THE%20PATTERN

Can you practice doing up your buttons and zips or maybe even explore tying laces? perhaps you could ties string around a parcel? maybe help a younger brother or sisiter (if you have one) perhaps you could try doing buttons or zips up on one of your teddies or dolls? or your coat - when you get really good, perhaps you could time how fast you can so it?

Using pencils, water and brushes, chalk etc Can you practice how to write the letter ‘c’

Remember to ‘curl around the caterpillar’

Can you make up a game of ‘Heads up’ to play with your family?

Put different characters (we like Disney ones!) on paper or postits and stick them to your head for everyone else to see. You have to then take it in turns to ask questions to help you guess who your character might be… (eg am I a boy or girl? Am I an animal?) remember you can only answer yes or no!

Have a good day
