Holiday activities

Date: 16th Jul 2020 @ 10:20am

Hello

It has been lovely to see many of you in school or on Zoom over the past few weeks. I thought I would take this opportunity to suggest some skills and activities that you may want to practice / keep going over the Summer if you have opportunity.

Phonics – please keep practicing recognition of the sounds on the purple and orange sound mats (added as a file just in case you need a replacement copy). Have a sound dash, where the children say the sounds as fast as possible. Ask the children to put a counter over a specific sound, ask them to write a specific sound. Give them a word and ask them to find the sound in it. Write the sounds onto card or paper tiles and play snap or matching pairs with them.

Play word building games – choose a word and either explode or build it to hear the sounds in that word or put the sounds together to make a word. Play I spy to encourage observation using sounds.

Practice tricky words – stick them around the home, play matching pairs, spot them in books etc

Recap on all the games on the phonic play website.

I have also attached a booklet of phonic activities.

The attached link has suggestions of other ways to support phonics aswell as a video of the correct pronunciation of the phonic sounds. https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/blog/how-can-i-support-my-child-with-phonics-learning/

Please continue to enjoy stories daily – talk about the story, think about the events or what is going to happen. Think about the characters, how they are feeling, ways to describe them etc.

Number – please continue to practice numbers to 20; careful counting, recognition, counting forwards and back – maybe use the attached numbers to create a number line or draw a giant one from chalk? Practice counting on from a given number rather than going from zero. Spot missing numbers in the numberline. Go for a number hunt, looking for numbers in the environment.

Letter and number formation – please keep practicing correct formation using pens, crayons, chalk, paint etc

Why not keep a holiday diary? It is a great way to practice writing sentences and applying sounds to words, whilst writing for a purpose and having a lovely record of the summer.

I hope everyone has opportunity to relax and enjoy family time, whilst creating happy memories.

With all best wishes

Mrs Cuthbert
