Kestrels home Learning week commencing 4th Jan
Date: 4th Jan 2021 @ 9:57pm
Monday 4th January
Hello and welcome to our home learning blog. It is hard to beleive we are learning from home again after only speding one day with the children this term. Can I take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support with home learning and for supporting your child with their activities.
We will be sending you more details as the week progresses but in the meantime, please find daily activities here, on the blog. Please send all learning correspondence to the kestrelhomelearning@ashtonhayes.cheshire.sch.uk email adress. We love seeing all the activities you have been doing and having the opportunity to celebrate your child's successes and achievements.
Tuesday 5th January
This week please have a go at the activities - week one 'Alive in 5' on the White Rose website.
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/alive-in-5-week-1/
Please also play a game that uses dice eg snakes and ladders, that allows your child to practice their counting and number skills. Please also encourage your child to recognise the number of spots without actually 'counting them' each time.
This term we plan to find out about contrasting environments and polar landscapes using the story of Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers as a stimulus for our learning. You may have this book or film at home, if not you can find a link to it being read on youtube here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRAAQ8EWzig
Please share the book with your child, thinking about the characters, main events and settings in the story. Please then ask your child to pick one page of the book to talk about, using their story teller voice and language from the story. Maybe they could draw a picture and write a caption or sentence about that part of the story.
Phonicsplay is an excellent website, currently offering an annual subscription at the reduced price of £6 to support home learning, should this be something you are interested in. In the meantime, please play 'buried treasure' (available free) using the sounds from phase 2, to practice blending and word building. (see update below)

With very best wishes and 'stay safe'

Wednesday 6th January
Good morning. I hope you all had a good day yesterday and managed the tasks ok?
Today we start our daily zoom session at 10.30am. This will be a quick 15 minute session to share ideas and input on the learning tasks and check in with everyone. We will set up a weekly Zoom session whereby there will be more opportunity to talk and share ideas.
To support each day's learning, I will add any files or supporting documents for that day, here on the blog. I have also set up a section on the main class page of the website with any ongoing resources including sound mats, activity ideas etc entitled 'Home Learning Spring 2021'
You should have received a log in for Tapestry via email. Please download the app as it is a useful way of uploading and sharing the amazing activities your child has been doing with the EYFS team. We can also be contacted via the class email kestrelhomelearning@ashtonhayes.cheshire.sch.uk
UPDATE!! I have heard this morning that Phonicsplay are once again offering their website for free to support home learning. The log in details are; jan21 password;home. Apologies if you have already purchased the subscription. Last year phoncs play very kindly extended the personal subscriptions to reflect the months that had been free, so if you have purchased access, something similar may happan agan?
On Phonics play can you play Picnic on pluto, using phase 2 sounds?
Cvc picture cards – look at pictures (on the attached file) and segment the words to hear the separate sounds. Perhaps you could also try and write some of the words you hear? Don’t forget to use the orange sound mat to help recognise what all the letters look like.
Using your orange phase 2 sound mat, have a ‘sound dash’.
See how quickly you can recognise all the different sounds on the mat. Play ‘show me’ a sound - ask a grown up to say a letter sound for you to find.
Bonds to 5 – can you find 5 similar objects in your home. See how many ways you can split the group of 5 into 2 groups – how many are in each group? Can you record how many you have in each pair of groups that makes 5?
Extension – with your group of 5 objects, cover your eyes and ask someone to take some of them away.
How many have they taken? How many more do you need to make 5?
White rose – Alive in 5 week 1
Thinking back to the story of Lost and Found yesterday, Can you have a go at making some puppets to tell the story of Lost and Found? Kestrels are all really good at making stick puppets, but maybe you could put your pictures onto loops to make finger puppets? Which characters are in the story? Which puppets will you need to make to tell the story? I have attached some images you could use, but your own ideas and pictures will be just as amazing!
Can you practice your Ball skills? I have attached a file of ideas, but you may have some games at home that you enjoy playing. How many times can you throw and catch the ball? Can you aim at a target? Remember to take care and watch the ball carefully.
Lost and found office. The boy in the Lost and Found story visits the lost and found office when he is trying to help the penguin. Could you make a lost and found office? Perhaps it could be for ‘lost toys’
Could you label the toys? Do you have a pretend phone to take calls from people looking for their toys? Could you make some posters to show which toys are in the Lost and Found office? which toys are in the Lost and Found office?
Best Wishes
Mrs Cuthbert
Thursday 7th January
Hello - it was lovely to see so many of you on Zoom and also see your lovely activities on email and Tapestry.
On Phonics play can you play buried Treasure using phase 2 sounds, to practice your blending.
Work in a pair – each child chooses a different word from the phase 2 tricky word list (to, the no, go I into) to write on a noughts and crosses grid. The winner is the pupil who writes it three times in a row (horizontally, vertically, diagonally)
Why not read the words on the word mat or written on a large sheet of paper and ask your child to find and place a peg or counter on the word as quickly as they can.
Make 6 cards using the words from the phase 2 tricky word mat. Hide these around the house. Try and find them.
Bedtime story – ‘Snow’ read by Joanna Page

White rose – Alive in 5- week one session 4.
Also please watch Numberblocks Series 1 .episode 12
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08dr1l3/numberblocks-series-1-the-whole-of-me
Can you help the numberblocks create number 5 – which 2 number blocks could combine to create number 5? On the attached file are some numberblock images, however you may want to draw your own numberblocks or alternatively use 5 pieces of lego or duplo to create a ‘numberblock character’ of your own, which you then break into 2 smaller pieces/ numberblock characters. Can you record the pairs of numberblocks that make 5?
Can you create a winter picture?
See the attached file for some ideas
Using pencils, water and brushes, chalk etc Can you practice how to write the letter ‘a’
Remember to go ‘around the apple and down the leaf’
Puzzles – can you find and complete some jigsaw puzzles at home?
Alternatively try an online one – see link
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/curations/cbeebies-jigsaw-puzzles
Have a lovely day- make sure you wrap up warm if you play outside, I think its going to be another chilly day!
Best Wishes

Friday 8th January
Good morning. As we reach the end of the first week I would like to thank everyone for their support with home learning.
It has been lovely to see so many emails and entries on Tapestry. I am replying to each email and commenting on each Tapestry log - if however you can't see these comments, or they are duplicated, please let me know to ensure all the children get access to their feedback.
Mrs Bacchus will be leading the Zoom session today at the usual time of 10.30.
Story maps – can you create a story map of the Lost and Found story? You may remember we made them about the Gingerbread Man? Start with a large sheet of paper and have a go at drawing the main events of the story – my story map would start at the boy’s house, then I would have the Lost and Found Office, then the harbour and big boats. Next I would have the boy in his little boat in the sea. I would then go to the South Pole, finishing with the boy and penguin meeting again.
Using your orange phase 2 sound mat, have a ‘sound dash’.
See how quickly you can recognise all the different sounds on the mat. Play ‘show me’ a sound - ask a grown up to say a letter sound for you to find.
‘A Bug’ –phonicsplay comics – after logging in (don’t forget the free log in; jan21 home) scroll to bottom of home page on main jolly phonics website for the link to phonicsplay comics (please also read any others in the phase 2 band)

1, 2 and 3
The formation rhymes can be found in the files on the Spring 2021 section of the class page (or on the number formation mats provides earlier in the school year)
Movie night – why not plan a movie night?
Make tickets, get a cosy seating area, maybe make some popcorn or chop up some other snacks?
Perhaps you could make cones from semi circles for your snacks?
Have a lovely weekend
Mrs Cuthbert
