Spellings

In Year 3 and 4, the children are expected to learn a number of spelling patterns. I have compiled all of the spelling patterns into word banks and the children will receive one set per week. Each set of words is designed for the children to practise a particular spelling rule or pattern which they will have looked at in school that week. Try to emphasise these rules and patterns at home rather than simply learning the words for a test. Some sets of spellings are intended as revision, for example homophones or adding ‘ed’ endings. Whilst they may appear to be simple spellings, they are common spelling errors that children make in their writing and they need to practise applying the rules and using these words in context. Please note, spellings will come home on a Monday and will be tested the following Friday.

A document containing all of the word banks is available right here on our class page so they can be accessed at any time.

Times tables

Year 3 children are expected to learn their 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 times tables by the end of year 3 and year 4 children are expected to know all of their tables up to 12x12 by the end of year 4. For this reason, we do a ‘Mad Minutes’ challenge every Monday morning to encourage the children to learn their tables at home. The children attempt to answer as many questions as possible in 2 minutes. Over the year, the children progress through the different tables as they improve.

Reading

Please try to read with your child as often as possible and encourage enjoyment of reading. All children will have been given a reading folder containing reading books and a reading record. While you are welcome to write in the reading records, please encourage your child to reflect on their reading and start to make their own comments too. Children who are free readers can choose any book (either from home or from our school library) to read and this should be taken home and brought back in to school every day.

MyMaths and SPAG.com homework will be set on a Friday to be completed by the following Friday. All children have been given a card with their personal login details. If you need reminding of any login details, please speak to the class teacher.

A Maths and English activity menu is also available below. These are optional activities that you can complete at home over the year to help to support your child with their learning.

Thank you for your support!
